Brief history:
Medieval Roots (1119–1307)
Original Knights Templar: A military-monastic order founded in 1119 to protect Christian pilgrims in the Holy Land during the Crusades.
Suppression: In 1307, King Philip IV of France, seeking power and wealth, arrested and tortured Templars. Pope Clement V disbanded the order in 1312.
Masonic Revival (18th Century Onward)
Mythic Connection: During the 1700s, some Freemasons began claiming spiritual or symbolic lineage from the original Templars.
Rite Formation: The modern Masonic Knights Templar emerged as part of the broader Masonic movement in Scotland, Ireland, and France, especially among Christian Masons.
York Rite: In the United States, the Knights Templar became one of the three major bodies in the York Rite system of Freemasonry.
Today: Masonic Templarism exists worldwide as a respected Masonic order, focusing on charity, values, and historical pageantry. The Masonic Knights Templar is an appendant body of Freemasonry, inspired by the Medieval Knights Templar but not directly descended from them. Not military or political power.
A fantastic addition to your history archive!
