Anton LaVey’s letter to Reverend Pierre P. Raguet was sent during a significant time in 1975. The Church of Satan was splitting up during some turbulent times (schism), as some were joining a new sect called Temple of Set. The letter is sent to Pierre, who was loyal to Anton LaVey. In the letter Anton let’s Pierre know that he is giving him Priesthood in the Church of Satan. This letter from 1975 provides unique insight into a part of the Church of Satan's history that isn't found in standard public archives or mainstream biographies.
During the early to mid-1970s, Anton LaVey and the Church of Satan operated through a system of local chapters called "Grottos." LaVey routinely corresponded with Grotto leaders and individual members across the country, granting various degrees of priesthood (such as Priest of Mendes) via official letters and signed certificates, often typed on his distinctive letterhead.
Because the Church of Satan disbanded the official Grotto system later in 1975 and centralized its operations, many records of local priests and regional activities from that era remain entirely in private hands. This document is a rare primary source from a pivotal year in the organization's history.
