The Kapala is made from human bone found at sky burial sites which exposes the body to nature. A Kapala, or ritual skull bowl (or cup), is a sacred object associated with Vajrayana Buddhism, particularly the tantric traditions of Tibet and the Himalayas. Traditionally fashioned from a human cranium, the Kapala is used symbolically in advanced Buddhist rituals and meditation practices as a vessel for offerings, representing the profound transformation of death, impermanence, and attachment into wisdom and spiritual liberation. Rather than being an object of morbidity, the skull serves as a powerful reminder that the physical body is transient and that death is an inevitable part of existence. Kapalas have been used in Tibetan Buddhist ritual practice for centuries, often appearing alongside other tantric implements and sometimes elaborately mounted in precious metals and ornamentation.
